Fic Series: Murphy's Laws of Combat
Fandom: Final Fantasy VII
Title: Murphy's Laws of Combat: 3 - Never draw fire; it irritates everyone around you.
Rating: PG for minor swearing.
Summary: "Sephiroth could not understand why so many of the officers were glaring at him in the mess following his first engagement with the enemy."

It had seemed logical enough. He would go out in front of the troops to draw the enemy fire. His speed was sufficient to dodge most of the bullets, and he would be able to parry those he could not dodge. The enemy would be interested in taking down the new General from ShinRa, and would concentrate their fire on him, rather than on his forces.

Sephiroth could not understand why so many of the officers were glaring at him in the mess following his first engagement with the enemy.

It took three days before he was able to understand. Three days of the silent treatment from every single officer, and wariness from all the ShinRa toadies who had been sent out to try diplomacy. He had, in the end, learned why he was persona non grata by overhearing some of the troopers.

"Bloody hotshot," one of them had grumbled. "He can dodge bullets. We can't. But that dun't matter, do it?"

"Yeah, well, 'e's ShinRa, in't 'e?" another replied. "They dun't care 'bout the likes of us. They just wants the materia an' the mako. Troopers lives dun't matter none."

"Too bloody right," the first one grumbled back. "Still, dun't see why I should have to be killed 'cos some hotshot kid wants to make his name."

"'Ush up. Sergeant's comin'," a third voice whispered. The men fell silent, unaware of the slim figure who had heard their words twenty feet away, and was now reviewing the order of battle for the following day.

Yes, he really does need help with people skills. He's not likely to get it for another few years, though, until this young recruit by the name of Fair starts turning SOLDIER on its ear. At the moment, he's still young, still learning, and all he knows of battle, combat, people and anything else is pure theory. There are going to be any number of similar harsh lessons for him, while he finds his feet.

Oh, I don't agree about shooting Hojo. Way too quick and simple.

Given my 'druthers, I'd probably go with the Mikado's suggestion of "something lingering, with boiling oil". Or maybe just popping him in a room with Sephiroth and a couple of dozen Restore materia. Or just take him to the roof of the Shinra tower and throw him off, then get someone to revive him when he hits the ground. Lather, rinse, repeat until therapy is complete.

No, I'm not too fond of Hojo. I tend to blame him pretty thoroughly for the whole slew of FFVII canon disasters, mindfucks, and catastrophes (although I will absolve him of getting Jenova to land on the planet in the first place... that one he couldn't have influenced).

Y helo thar, stream of consciousness fic!

He thought about the Reunion. Sephiroth's actions had forced a change in theory. (The boy had been willful.) Strength of will, enough to call on whatever was needed, trumping all better-laid plans.

He couldn't resist for much longer. They said he was needed. The flow swelled. He had to stay. The flow surged.

He thought about the beach at Costa del Sol. Don't stray out too far, or you'll be pulled out.

Pulled in.

Everything races and plods, leaves and arrives. Movement, always.

Strength of will, to call on what was needed.

Everything melts into green.

Make noise. Be loud. Scream that there was life. Hear the call and partake.

Finally, finally impact. The feeding began. Flowing towards the new life, to take it into the flow...

It had been a long voyage, but an invitation was novel. Rather than fear, there was welcome, partake without worry. But rest was needed before the greater feast. Too tiring to consume from the source for so long. The sampling served to weary rather than refresh. Taking shoots, buds, that was simpler.

Jenova waited for them to appear.

OOoh! Now there's an interesting notion. And another reason to see whether Hojo will bounce if he's thrown off the top of the Shinra tower. I even have the experimental team standing by to gather the data.

Sephiroth is doing the throwing, of course. Aeris has been set to gathering the result data and collating it (by PHS - Seph tends to want to throw Hojo a fair old distance at times). In the "ensuring an adequate data sample" team are Zack, Cloud, Tseng, Nanaki, Tifa, Vincent and Nesa, all equipped with materia to restore the good professor to full health and hideousness, and a squad of Turks or troopers to escort our experimental subject back to the tower for the next round (their backup team includes Reno, Barret, Cid, and Reeve - Reno doesn't have anything in particular against Hojo, but he wants to join the fun). I'll let people know when they've accumulated a decent data sample.

For just a split second, I thought that read "by SPSS." SPSS comes later.

I think that Sephiroth will just take whatever the good doctor thought was a good data sample, and then multiply square cube it for the experiment.
